Abstract
Introduction: The scare is a cultural syndrome, considered as an evil or disease of damage when the person "loses the soul" before an environment where stressful situations are carried out and whose intervention is by means of the rites based on a rapport and empathy patient - shaman. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of the scare treatment based on shamanic ritual from a previous description of the diagnostic characteristics of this cultural syndrome. Methods: Two phases were designed: one to analyze the object of study and propose an explanatory model of the characteristics of the scare as a cultural syndrome and another phase to elaborate a model that would allow to know the therapeutic efficacy of shamanism. The population consisted of 50 inhabitants of the District of Morrope, who presented the scare cultural syndrome, with attendance to shamanic rituals. Results: An etiology caused by stressful events affecting functionality and quality of life was found, with symptoms such as: lack of mood, anorexia, body pain, sleep disorder, nocturnal fear and body tremor; symptoms such as anxiety, abnormal beliefs (harm, witchcraft), sleep disorders, including nightmares, with episodes lasting 1-3 weeks, were also found. Different phases of a strategy for the evaluation of the effectiveness of the scare treatment were proposed, which included the application of psychological instruments in subjects attending shamanic rituals. Conclusions: The scare presented a particular symptomatology that is assumed to be dependent on territory and culture, achieving to evidence that shamanism presents an efficacy for its treatment.
