Abstract
Diabetes mellitus leads to renal and visual damage and am-putation in patients; therefore, experimental models allow to know the antidiabetic properties of flora products. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the hydroethanolic ex-tract (HEE) of Geranium ruizii Hieron f rom O tuzco, L a Libertad (Peru) on induced hyperglycemia in Rattus rattus variety albi-nus. Two groups induced to hyperglycemia with alloxane were used; one called positive control and the other treated with a single dose of HEE of Geranium ruizii Hieron 400mg kg-1 b.w. orally; and a third group called negative control treated with physiological solution, with the evaluation of glycemias at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 hours. The negative control remained in nor-moglycemia, the positive control in hyperglycemia between 198 to 568mg dl-1; and in the group treated with Geranium rui-zii Hieron HEE, glycemia decreased significantly from 94 to 250mg dl-1 ( p= 0 .023). T hrough A NOVA, i t w as d etermined t hat the variation of the alloxane + HEE group of Geranium ruizii Hieron d iffered b y - 141.2 ± 38.74mg dl-1 compared to the positive control (p= 0.039). It is concluded that HEE of Geranium ruizii Hieron decreases hyperglycemia in Rattus rattus variety albinus.
