Abstract

Higher education students are at a critical stage in their lifestyles due to the transition to university life, and are prone to develop diseases that are precursors of low levels of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle. In the following work, a narrative review is made on the relationship between physical activity, sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity in the university population. The article aims to reflect on the context that frames health and hypokinetic behaviors, exposing the consequences of the absence of quality spaces. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in leading scientific databases, including PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. The search strategy was designed to obtain as many relevant studies as possible, the search terms included university sports and health, university physical activity and sedentary lifestyle, physical inactivity and poor university habits. In addition, a criterion of temporality was established, selecting articles published between 2014 and 2024. The fundamental conclusion of this analysis is that the findings are related to the experience prior to university life in terms of sports awareness and aptitude, long hours and academic commitments, added to a behavior of insufficient quality motor movement, evidence a potential baseline towards unhealthy habits. However, these behaviors are reversible under guarantees given in policies according to the context and the needs of students and the territory.
