Abstract
Currently, small, and medium-sized companies have a strong presence and relevance in the economic activities of Mexico, due to their contribution to the Mexican gross domestic product and being an important source of job creation. However, these companies present a complex situation derived from the poor preparation of their managers, which causes multiple problems in the first two years of operation. The objective is to determine which management skills are associated with and have a positive impact on the competitiveness of Mexican SMEs. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and correlational approach was used. One hundred and eight surveys were applied to managers of SMEs. The results indicate that decision-making, time management and problem solving as managerial skills are positively associated with the competitiveness of companies. It is concluded that the level of development and impact of managerial skills depends on the size of the company and the seniority of the manager in the position, and that these have a positive relationship with business management, which impacts competitiveness.
