N2 - In recent times, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has become imperative for educational institutions, prompting the need for scholarly research and policy considerations. Therefore, the current study investigates the effects of virtual teaching assistants, intelligent tutoring systems, and smart education on academic performance in higher education within the context of Peru. This study examines the mediating role of the learning environment in relation to virtual teaching assistants, intelligent tutoring systems, smart education, and higher education performance in Peru. The primary data for this study was collected from higher educational institutions through the administration of survey questionnaires. The study also utilised the smart-PLS methodology to examine the relationship between the variables. The results of the study suggest that there is a positive correlation between the use of virtual teaching assistants, intelligent tutoring systems, and smart education and academic performance in higher education settings in Peru. The results also revealed that the learning environment plays a significant role in mediating the relationship between virtual teaching assistants, intelligent tutoring systems, smart education, and higher education performance in Peru. The study provides guidance to policymakers in formulating policies aimed at improving higher education performance through the utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) and the establishment of an optimal learning environment.
