Abstract

Currently, technology is essential in various healthcare services. Therefore, healthcare professionals need to incorporate these competencies into their work environment. The objective of the study was to establish competencies in the use of information technology for nurse-patient communication in a national hospital. The methodology employed was a quantitative approach, descriptive, cross-sectional, and non-experimental in design. The sample consisted of 256 nurses from a hospital in Lima who work in various specialties within the healthcare field; simple random probabilistic sampling was applied. The instrument used was a competency assessment tool for the use of Internet and New Technologies in nursing professionals, with three dimensions: knowledge, skills, and attitudes, containing 23 items on a Likert scale. The tool was validated, and its reliability was measured at a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.8. The results obtained show that nursing professionals possess basic knowledge (57%), intermediate knowledge (43%), regarding skills, 59% have a basic level and 41% intermediate level, and finally, in terms of attitudes, 95% are favorable and 5% unfavorable. This situation limits the possibility of having effective nurse-patient communication, as well as continuous professional development in technological competencies for information and communication in healthcare.
