Resumen

Cognitive strategies represent a set of mechanismsto face the challenges of learning by becoming tools essential for the development of skills associated with doing and knowing; Given its importance, this study analyzed the relationship between cognitive strategies and mathematical competences in institutions of initial education. The research was of a non-experimental type, transactional, descriptive - analytical correlational. As starting point scientific documents from databases were reviewed such as Scopus, Scielo, Redalyc, and Dialnet. The research technique was direct observation, using a questionnaire made up of 24 items for recording the corresponding indicators. The population was made up of 15 educational institutions, a program was designed non-probabilistic sampling for convenience resulting as subjects informants 126 students and 7 teachers. Among the results was obtained that cognitive strategies promote the development of processes mental, activate learning and lead to the achievement of competenciesmath. Likewise, the strategies of acquisition, recovery and coding are essential for the storage of information in the memory and the resolution of more complex problems from their daily lives.
