Resumen
This systematic review article investigated the influence of virtual reality (VR) applications in the tourism sector. Exhaustive searches were conducted across different databases, identifying 318 studies, out of which 9 were selected for detailed review. Among the key findings, access to remote destinations and immersive experiences accounted for 77.8% of the selected studies, highlighting the potential of VR to bring inaccessible destinations closer to tourists and provide more engaging experiences. On the other hand, significant challenges were identified in implementing VR technologies in tourism promotion, including costs, infrastructure, content adaptation, promotion, and dissemination, with infrastructure being the most relevant aspect, affecting 88.9% of the cases. This article shed light on the importance and impact of virtual reality applications in tourism promotion.
